December 1, 2019
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with their families. It is hard for me to believe that we are already heading into our last month of 2019. There are many things our class will be doing this month before the holiday break which begins at the end of the day on December 20th.
This coming week we will begin spelling. I will send a list of ten words home each Monday with your child. They will do different practice skills and daily games in the classroom to help them learn the words. On Wednesday, I will give the class a pretest. If your child gets 100% on Wednesday (absolutely no mistakes), they will not have to take the test again. All others will take the test again on Friday. Please encourage your child to study the words at home by having them write the words several times each.
My students will also start our reading contest this coming week. I sent home the December reading schedule last week, if you need another, please let me know. Your child has been assigned one day each week to read aloud to the class. They must practice and be able to read their book in order to get credit for that day. They can only read a book once. Each week they must have a different book to read to the class. Please have your child start out with something easy and slowly work their way up. The book shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes for them to read. If your child is sick on their reading day, they will be able to bring their book and participate when they return to school. If they just forget their book on their day, there will be no make-up for that. I will keep track of how many books they read and reward them at the 10 and 20 book intervals. At the end of the school year, the top reader(s) will receive a $30. Gift card to their favorite store.
Our Christmas Music Concert is scheduled for Wednesday, December 18th. Each class will host a theme basket to be raffled off after the concert. Our theme is the Holiday Table. If you are able to donate something for the basket, I would greatly appreciate it. It can be anything for setting a festive table, or something used to prepare a festive meal. Here are some ideas: tablecloths, napkins, potholders, salt & pepper shakers, decorative paper plates, etc.
On Friday, December 20th, our class will have our Christmas Party. I would like my students to have a gift exchange that day. Please have the girls bring a gift to exchange with a girl, and boys for a boy. Please limit the amount spent on the gift to $5. If you signed up to send in a treat on that day, I will send you a reminder soon. Thanks so much for all you do.
Please visit my page titled Thanksgiving Feast so see pictures of my students during our celebration last Wednesday. It was a fun day. We all have so much to be thankful for.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kinney
